Infection In Gum After Amoxycillin (Top voted first)
Updatedfull hip replacement booked for 7th september and i got infection in a rotten tooth, dentist prescribed amoxycillin . on completion of course , went back and asked for another x ray and letter for hospital to confirm the infection has gone. dentist says thats not posslble as infection still there until tooth extracted, The initial infection was around the periphery of the root. I was under the impression the amoxycillin would kill that infection. Now surgeon will not operate until i have letter from someone to say i have no infection .I am wondering if its worth going to another dentist. what would you reccomend in order for my operation to get underway as soon as possible? Regards, Malcolm

Hello, Malcolm! How are you? I am very sorry about the problem that you're having.
In this case, it might be best to have the tooth extracted, so your dentist can be certain that the infection has been eradicated and your surgery can proceed.
If you read NIH studies, an antibiotic does not always fully eradicate an infection, you may have resistant bacteria that require stronger antibiotics for proper treatment.
Are you adverse to having the tooth removed?
Hi verwon, many thanks for your reply and I think I shall take your advice and have the tooth extracted.I was under the impression that amoxy was a one time cure all but now I see thats not the case. I really appreciate your taking the time to reply, regards, malcolm
