Im Allergic To Penicillin Will Cephalexin Give The Same Reaction

Im allergic to penicillen and was given cephalexin, can I take them or will it kill me like penicillin will??

Hi Franny,

Based on my research, Penicillin and Cephalexin are classified as two different types of antibiotics (cephalosporin antibiotics and penicillin antibiotics). However, more information I'm finding states that there is some clinical and laboratory evidence of partial cross-allergenicity of the penicillins and the cephalosporins.

Apparently there have been patients who reported severe reactions to both medications. So I don't think any exceptions should be made for Cephalexin in this regard either (at least to play it safe).

I got the prescription in the emergency room, I did inform the intake nurse that I have a severe allergic reaction to penicillin.
