If I M Allergic To Sulfasalazine And Smz Tmp Can Take Neomycin

if i'm allergic to sulfasalazine and smz-tmp can i take neomycin. I have a total colectomy scheduled for Monday Dec 1, 2014 and I am suppose to start on the neomycin and metronidazole on tomorrow. i am terrified that I will have the horrific reactions that I had in the past with sulfasalazine and smz-tmp if I take this new prescription Please help if u have the knowledge. Thanks so much

I would try to get a second opinion on this from your doctor, but from what I can tell, if you are allergic to both SMZ-TMP + Sulfasalazine, it's possible that Neomycin Sulfate may cause a similar type of allergic reaction.

There are different types of sulfa/sulfonamide-related allergies that may not pose the same risks as others, but being allergic to both types I wouldn't even want to take a chance. Smz-tmp for example is a sulfonamide, and is NOT chemically related to sulfite in regards to allergies. But if you're also allergic to Sulfasalazine then it's probably a good idea to just stay clear of anything sulfite/sulfa/sulfur related to play it safe.

Does anyone else have thoughts on this?
