Re: Ken (# 1)
My dad is a Vietnam Vet. I have been diagnosed with JAK2 gene and have blood disorders.
I too have been dx with Polycythemia Vera, possibly Myelofibrosis AND was diagnosed as being positive for the JAK2 mutation. I am 76 years old. There's also too much Uric acid in my blood. None of it good for my kidneys.
I am also a Vietnam vet (Hue, Vietnam, USAID/CORDS '66-'67). My job certainly took me to tromping around the villages and rice paddies and jungles that were previously sprayed with Agent Orange.
(Sidenote: there is nothing as grotesque and stomach-turning as watching from a spotter plane as big planes sprayed the land with these defoliants. You could see the Earth and vegetation turn brown, you could even hear the Earth groan, as the toxic soup was sprayed on land and creatures. How could we humans do this to others?)
Hi Ken,
I'm not a patient who's been diagnosed with Polycythemia Vera (PV), but thought I might be able to help add to some of your research in regards to the types of diseases that may manifest from exposure to Agent Orange.
*Page 2 (third paragraph on the right) within the following PDF link includes PV on their list of conditions suffered by veterans who were exposed to agent orange/radiation while serving in Vietnam: publichealth.va.gov/docs/agentorange/reviews/ao_newsletter_feb85.pdf
You may also find more references of PV being linked to Agent Orange back in 2004 and 2012 as an appeal from the Department of Veterans Affairs:
1). va.gov/vetapp04/files
2). va.gov/vetapp12/files
From the looks of it the appeal didn't seem to work in the favor of veterans, as the VA went on to state (in the two articles above) that any veterans who have been diagnosed with PV are not recognized by the VA as having their symptoms related to an exposure of herbicide agents that were being used in Vietnam. To me this kinda sounds like an excuse from the VA for a way out of compensation, but I suppose only those who were truly there and present will ever know if they had been exposed.
Hope this helps!
I am a 64 years old white male. I too was in country Vietnam with the "brown water Navy" from 1/70 through 6/71. I was diagnosed with PV in Dec. of 2010. I'm always interested in corresponding with Nam Vets and especially those who have been diagnosed with PV.
