Hydrocodone As Relief For Hay Fever.
UpdatedI have suffered from hay fever since I was a kid. I am now 70. I have been taking hydrocodone for years, never more than 3 in a day and usually one or two for pain from arthritis. Besides relieving pain I have found that hydrocodone is absolutely the best medicine for my hay fever. After taking a hydrocodone all hay fever symptoms are gone within 30 minutes. My new doctor will not prescribe hydrocodone instead preferring to give me tramadol which relieves MINOR pain and helps with the hay fever, but is not nearly as effective as hydrocodone. I have to take two at a time for any relief. I can't wait until January when I can switch back to my original doctor. I'm certainly not hooked on hydrocodone. I don't get a buzz from it, I only get relief from my hay fever and arthritis pain. Any suggestions?

That's an awesome testimony Stan. I would've never imaged hydrocodone having an off-label use for something like hay fever. However I theorize that perhaps certain activity taking place on your opiate receptors indirectly influence your body's response to hay fever. Have you tried any other narcotic analgesics outside of tramadol that worked for you in a similar fashion since the timing of your post?
If hydrocodone is the only recourse that helps, it sounds to me like it may be time to switch doctors, but I probably wouldn't let on as to the reason why you're looking for a new one (or that you're even looking at all) or he/she might get suspicious and red flag you for doctor shopping. With a strategy and patience it may be your best bet. This is just my outside perspective. I wish you all the best and look forward to reading any future updates you might have.
I absolutely agree. I've had an allergic cough for 50 years, and the only medicine that really seems effective and allows me to sleep is hydrocodone cough syrup. I can't help but feel there is some deeper significance to this, but doctors just shrug when I tell them. I don't like taking it for too long because of side effects and would love to understand why it helps to see if there is some alternative.
Hi, I am happy you found a drug that has a duel action effect for you. Not speaking on the hay fever but on the fact that as of late most primary care docs treat the flu and cold only lol. Most are to ignorant about analgesics. They would rather you suck down hand fills of Advil and indomethacin witch are worse for you. Let's looks at the fact you are a 70 year chronic pain suffer who for years has never abused your script as a matter of fact I would bet the SIG on your script say to take 1 or 1 to 2 tabs every 4-6 hours or Qid wich is,4 times and day as necessary for pain so in fact you have completely proven your are a ultra low risk abuse patient.
Pyscians are suppose to give the patient the benefit of the doubt untill proven wrong. I assume your on 7.5mg or 10mg and if you only talking 2 sometimes 3 a day that is far better then tramadol. to get close to the analgesic effect of the hydrocodone you would need a larger dose of tramdal that has a more negative effect of your liver and the organs and just do dnt cut it for more moderate to severe pain.
Find another doc, there are good ones out there still, since GP are to scared you might need a pain mng doc. It bother me more then you know. Handled properly no one should suffer. It's not cheap but you might look into the extended release hydrocodone.
I hope you the best and if you have, any questions feel free to ask as I have devoted 30 years of my life to scheduled analgesics.
