Hydrocodone And Expired Tramadol

Updated July 11, 2016

I have been prescribed tramadol 50 mg and hydrocodone 5-325 for migraines. Tramadol is always my first go to and if that doesn't work then I try the hydro. However, the tramadol is expired and has been for a year (I am in college and dealt with moving etc so don't have a doctor at the moment to get a new prescription that is unexpired.) I am literally having one of the worst migraines of my life which its so bad that the pain woke me up even after taking an (expired) tramadol. I took the expired tramadol at 10pm and it is now 2 am. Would it be okay for me to now take a hydrocodone after 4 hours (usually I wait 6 but I believe the tramadol did not work because it's expired?) Normally I would just go to the ER when it is this bad however I am taking summer courses and have an 8 am final I cannot miss. Would it be safe to now take a hydro?

Hello, Flex! How are you? I am so sorry that you're miserable.

Tramadol does not become toxic, once expired, but it does start to lose efficacy, so it may not work as well as it did, when new.

As to mixing it with the Hydrocodone, only your doctor can advise you if it is safe for you to do sooner than the regular dosing schedule.

The FDA warns that these medications carry the risk of being habit forming and may cause side effects, such as nausea, dizziness, headache, dry mouth and constipation.

How did your final go?
