My 9lb dog is on this med for chronic cough. She has been having very soft stools that has a very strong odor. Is this common? Also is there anything to add to food that will take care of this problem? Thank you.

The site effects in dogs will usually be very similar to those in humans, so yes, that is a possible side effect. Virtually any medication can affect stool odor and consistency.
As listed by the FDA, other side effects may include nausea, drowsiness, dry mouth and constipation.
Have you consulted your vet? They would be the best person to advise you on whether or not there's anything that may help.
