How To Change Pain Doctors / Find A Good One.
UpdatedI really want to start my story with my main concern in case anyone doesn't have time or interest to read the whole thing. So I've suffered now for eleven years, have had 5 surgeries, PT, many many inj's., multiple doctors and opinions, had a very high stress and crazy physical job, acupuncture, have tried so many medications. I had a good pain doctor years ago that left and my family doctor of two decades took pity on me and by this point I had a psychiatrist that helped me for two months while he decided if he was comfortable with what I needed. Five years later I was no longer getting relief from 6 Perc 10's and he wasn't comfortable adding anything else so I found a new pain doctor close to me and was very anxious about it but he ended up being pretty good; but he also left abruptly. Now the woman that has taken his place is on a mission to cut everyone's pain medicine and in the four months that I have seen her she has decreased my medication from 80mg oxycodone, then 60mg, then 40 mg Percocet (which actually worked better for me than the oxy and last time when I told her that I had done okay). Most of the time I have to see the nurse practitioner who is very rude and one month I was 5 days short and tried to explain that I had had two abscessed teeth and showed her the antibiotics and that most of the month I had been in bed with pneumonia. She told me that there would be no changes until I followed the rules and learned how to suffer! Anyway so she came back with a script for 3-7.5 (that's been two weeks and I have less than 10 left). The nurses say all of the patients are unhappy. I need to add that almost 3 years ago I had no alternative but to stop working, was hospitalized for a week for an ulcer and then spent 8 months in bed until I finally attempted to take my life; and I have been married to a wonderful man for 23 years and have 4 amazing children and at 23 was the charge nurse of a 29 bed busy high risk OB unit. Finally 2 years ago with a lawyer I finally got disability but would give anything to go back to work. My psychiatrist wrote my family doctor a note asking him to please take back over my care again and that in the three years that I had been her patient I had never run out of medicine, asked for increases or had any type of drug seeking behavior and i took the papers to the office (and missed two appointments because i had not been able to buy my antidepressant and was without them for ten days thinking I would make it but I didn't and started being unstable again after working so hard to be stable and was fine the last six months. I called to make the appointment and they said that I was blocked while they discussed it. So it's the holidays and I have no idea who to turn to. Help...I am in SC.

Hello Michelle! How are you doing? I am very sorry about what you're going through.
Did you ever get this situation resolved?
Unfortunately, many people have had to have their opiate medications changed, or experienced a cut to their dosages, as doctors are under heavy government scrutiny to make sure they aren't prescribing inappropriately, and according to a news article I read this morning, it seems that this situation is only going to get worse.
Ref: Opiate Information
Your GP may have been upset that you missed appointments, many of them will drop a patient that misses several in a row, or repeatedly misses appointments, without cancelling in advance, and of course, if you're on opiates, they are going to require you keep every appointment to be appropriately monitored.
