How Often Can I Request Vicodin Refill From My Doctor?

I'm in generally good health, but I asked my doctor for Vicodin to have on hand for occasional aches & pains and he prescribed 30 tabs (10mg). Question: generally speaking, how often can I ask for a refill without raising a red flag?

Unfortunately, there's no hard and fast rule I can give you for this. It really depends on your doctor, how understanding they are and how long they expect that prescription to last.

It it was for 'occasional' use, they may expect it last you a few months.

The FDA classifies this medication as a narcotic analgesic, so it has the potential to be habit forming and may cause side effects, such as nausea, dizziness, drowsiness, dry mouth and constipation.

Did you pharmacy list how many days supply it's expected to be? That's usually a good guideline.

Thanks Verwon. The label says one tab every 6 hours as needed for pain -- but that's standard language for Vicodin, isn't it? Maybe in a few months when I request a refill, I'll pose the same question to him: By the way, doc, how often can I request a refill without raising a red flag? We'll find out if he has a sense of humor!

Depends on your doctor and how much pain you have. You will need to see a pain management doctor for prescription medication especially if they are narcotics.
Good luck with your doctor and hope you get what you need for pain.

Honestly, asking this question, and admitting that you simply like to have it "on hand" is a red flag. Narcotic analgesics are not meant for everyday aches and pains.
