How Long Is Amoxicillin Good

I have a two year old prescription of amoxicillin from the dentist that I barely even touched. Now I'm showing syptoms of an UTI because I never drink any water. Would it be safe to take now?

The first step to take would be to start drinking some water regularly. It is actually a misconception that you need to drink 8 8ounce glasses a day. That is the total amount of fluid your body needs for the day, but you do get a lot of it from your food and other beverages, so even adding just a glass or two of water can help. It is especially important for flushing out your kidneys, if you continue to avoid water, you may find yourself in kidney failure eventually.

As to the Amoxicillin, medications lose effectiveness over time, so it will most likely not be as effective as it was, when new, which creates the risk of your developing antibiotic resistant bacteria. Thus, it would be best to see your doctor for a new prescription.

The FDA lists the typical side effects of this medication as possibly including nausea, dizziness, headache, non-allergic skin rash and diarrhea.
