How Can A Hospital Refuse To Give You Pain Meds

I have chronic migraines & fibromyalgia and I have been in so much pain for the last 12 months that I'm in the ER, then sometimes my Dr. will admit me for pain mgmt for a few days, but I just left the hospital in Illinois that I always go to and now they are refusing to give me any narcotics anymore! Now does that mean that even if my Dr. admits me through his office to the hospital I won't be able to get something like dilaudid? Or would I be able to go to another hospital for the dilaudid? My Dr. Is ok with putting me in for a day or so cuz he knows how much pain I'm in!! This is unfair! What do I do? Help please!!

Hello, Laura! How are you? I'm sorry about the problems you've had.

However, unless your life is in danger, no doctor is required to treat you and prescribe anything. Even then, they only have to treat you, until you are stable and out of danger. While pain is horribly miserable, it isn't considered life-threatening.

And due to the new regulations that were set forth by the DEA last year, most hospitals are refusing to do this for chronic pain patients, now. You are expected to see a pain management specialist, so you can be monitored regularly and get your pain under control.

Have you tried asking your doctor to refer you to someone?

The FDA classifies this medication as a narcotic analgesic, so it has the potential to be habit forming and may cause side effects, such as nausea, dizziness, drowsiness, dry mouth and constipation.
