Hello, Olada! How are you and your brother?
This medication is classified by the FDA as an antibiotic, so it is used to treat or prevent bacterial infections, regardless of whether or not someone may be HIV positive.
The typical side effects are listed as possibly including nausea, dizziness, headache, non-allergic skin rash and diarrhea.
It is just often prescribed for those that are HIV positive, because they may be more prone to developing bacterial infections, so it is very important to prevent them, if possible. But no, someone does not have to have HIV to have these prescribed.
Is there anything else I can help with?
