No, it is a later manifestation of Varicella Zoster, which is a form of the herpes virus and causes Chicken Pox. You have to have had one in order to develop the other, as reported by the NIH.

The issue is that not everyone may have the severe symptoms of chicken pox that many experience, so just like being infected with the herpes simplex that causes cold sores, they may not have known they ever had it and could be surprised to develop Shingles later in life.

I was just explaining to someone else the other day that by the time they are elderly, over 85% of the population is infected with the Herpes Simplex that causes cold sores, but only a small percentage ever develop cold sores. The ones who do get them, when infected, have one little different bend in a certain DNA strand. As to those that don't get them, they may never know, if they've no reason to be checked.

Someone not knowing they had chicken pox is a very rare occurrence, because most do react very badly to the virus, but it is possible that someone had a very mild case that wasn't noticed, or that was misdiagnosed as something else.

In other words, if your doctor thinks you have Shingles, you probably do and they can culture the lesions to be sure, or if your doctor thinks you should get the vaccine to prevent Shingles, then it would be best to do so.

Is there anything else I can help with?
