Getting More Than 30 Day Prescription For Travel

My wife has used Kadian for six years. She has a new Dr. We travel frequently, sometimes on short notice, and if we want to leave town for ten days when there are five days before she uses up her current prescription, we have to chase Dr. to write new script and then argue with ins. co. I would like her to have a cushion of a 30 day supply always in hand so we can hop on a plane regardless of when her current month's supply runs out. Has anyone found a good way to deal with this issue?

Unfortunately, there really is no solution.

U.S. federal law prohibits the dispensing of more than 30 days, at a time of controlled substances and Kadian contains the active ingredient Morphine, which is a controlled substance.

The only possible solution would be to have her doctor prescribe her a different dosage, in a different formulation, so it wouldn't be considered the same exact thing.

Thanks for the facts and the suggestion on differet dosages. We did get the Dr. to write two 30 day scripts a few days apart and the insurance company even paid for both, so we covered her need during our trip..

We have the same problem here in Fla. but when we want to travel, my PM will issue two prescription for 30 days each and will type on them the date they are allowed to be filled. It's kinda a hassle that you have to rush out to find a pharmacy on a certain daye that even HAS Kadian Brand name much less Generic so what i do is call head to the local pharmacy where we will be and ask them a week in advance to order generic Kadian for me. At first I ran into the pharmacys fear of being robbed so they would not even "talk" about having Kadian in inventory so I start out with my name and all info so they can look me up in the computer in the Walgreens or CVS system and know that I am not a robber just seeking an RX to rob. A shame that you have todo that these days but I hear pharmacy robbery is a big thing and It makes them not even want to carry the heavy meds on hand.

Sometimes in life a little white lie is in order. Tell him your going on a trip your really not going on and pocket the extra meds. They would prefer it that way. Not knowing that is. That what I did. Thats what was hinted at by my M.D. Youve been with this doc 6 years. He should trust you by now anyway.
