Generics With Less Active Ingredients

Is it true the government is allowing generic drugs to have less active ingredients?

This is a common misunderstanding.

Under the Hatch-Waxman Act of 1984, generics are allowed to differ from the name brand by as much as plus or minus 20% of the active ingredient. So they could be higher or lower in it, but most manufacturers are very conscientious and come closer to a 1% difference.
