Gabapentin Withdrawal Relief
(Newest replies first)

I've taken Gabapentin for 12 years increasing every time the pain worsened. In December my dose was 3600mg daily plus 600mg Lyrica. My trigeminal neuralgia pain was getting worse so i had brain surgery in December 2015. A week later on doctors instructions i eliminated one Gabapentin a week, then one Lyrica a week.. for the last three weeks i have been so nauseous i am miserable.. How long can this last? Is there any over the counter relief?

Drink regular amounts of water and drink your fruits and veggies (mixed w/1/2 cup each of both yogurt and water) in something like a Nutri Bullet or small blender, okay? It will make you feel inherently better because these meds are foreign to our natural body. & fruits & veggie shakes are natural for us.
This is just my personal opinion. I had a lot of nausea and diahreah. I also quit taking Gabapentin and stopped itching on the palms of my hands and between my fingers, especially at night. Feel better okay?
How are you feeling now? Dropping one pill each wasn't a bad call, hopefully your surgery was a success. We definitely worry more about your seizure threshold when tapering down your dose of both Lyrica and Gabapentin than we do any physical addiction of these type of anti-seizure/convulsant medications. Many people quit taking these medications everyday without any side effects but there are always a few who say that they have more physical symptoms than the norm so we always take it seriously. We probably would of had you discontinue the Gabapentin first 1 pill at a time each week and then taper your Lyrica. Every Doctor has their own way of doing it but you're ultimately the patient so whatever you feel comfortable with should be discussed with your doctor, it's your body and well being. I hope you were able to get off of everything or at least taking much smaller doses and that you're fully recovered.
You just have to go very slow in tapering off of it. I certainily wouldn't have gone down that fast, but MD's don't seem to know much about the killer side effects when starting the drug-it sapped all my enerfy for weeks. Nor the killer withdrawal symptoms. Slow, slow, slow. Keep your Doctor informed that this is the only way you can do it. Now, you'll still feel bad, and for a longer time. However, not nearly as bad as you feel now.
After being on it for so many years, it may take over a month for all your withdrawal symptoms to go away. As reported by the FDA, they may also include fever, diarrhea and rebound pain.
I'm not sure what might help with the nausea. Possibly Bonine, if your doctor approves of you trying it. Its typical side effects may include dizziness, drowsiness and dry mouth.
Does anyone else have any ideas?
