The effects of any given medication do not change, whether someone does, or does not have a prescription, the only thing that changes is the legality of it. Under current U.S. FDA drug laws, it is illegal to have it, or take it, if it has not been prescribed for you.
It is an anticonvulsant that is also used to treat certain types of nerve pain, and some mood disorders.
Its typical side effects may possibly include nausea, dizziness, headache, mood swings, and weight gain.
