Full Oxy Dose At Once Or Half The Dose At Shorter Intervals

My pain mgt MD gives me oxycodone IR 30mg but I cut in two and see if pain goes below 5 of 10 after 1 hr after first dose of half tab, if not I then take the other half. So far since my leg reconstruction surgery 7 weeks ago I have needed the full 30mg every time. Here is my question: Will I get a longer time of pain relief and thus a longer time period of my sense of well being when pain is gone by (1) taking the 30mg at single dose q 4 hrs or by (2)taking 15mg q 2 hrs, of course not taking the 2nd 15mg dose if pain<5? It seems to be cumulative but not in any consistent way that I can get a pattern tracked for optimal benefit? I was an RN for many years prior to CVA a few years ago, so am familiar with some of this but of course individual results vary. Thanks

If your doctor approves of your playing around with your dose, it really depends on what works best for you, because as you've noted, individual results can vary.

Some people may get longer periods of relief by taking the full dose, at once, but others may need to split it up.

It is even possible that splitting it one day and then taking the full dose the next day may be best for you.

The FDA classifies this medication as a narcotic analgesic, so it carries the risk of being habit forming and may cause side effects, such as nausea, dizziness, headache, dry mouth and constipation.

Does anyone else have any ideas or suggestions?
