Good morning, Dianna!
Just wanted to to reiterate your post as I agree being over 50, and using this medication judicially for 30 years, I too had to find a new doc 15 yrs ago and ran into the same stuff. Sure there are people that will abuse anything and everything! For a good doc, that takes the time to look at the history of a person, this just should not be a problem especially with all the monitoring and testing in place for compliance. Even if you are younger and trying to navigate the political climate, as long as you are open to other options as part of your treatment plan, it may take some time but do not give up and suffer needlessly. Best wishes!
Fiorinal C contains 2 narcotics & this is not prescribed lightly. Some docs will not prescribe at all. They can be addictive. It is essential that you find a headache specialist who can evaluate and recommend the appropriate meds. Fiorinal is a basic part of your arsenal and likely you need to keep a supply on hand, but you also need someone to chart and assess your usage to determine that you can manage this safely. Find the right doc and be prepared for them to be conservative until they trust you. I'm 69 & have been using it successfully for years but recently I moved to a new city & needed a new family doc & she said it was an outdated med which no one prescribes any more. I fired her on the spot. She was simply uninformed. The same day I found myself a headache/pain mgmt specialist who saved me. I was actually under-using the drug. Good luck!
Dear Joyce, please read my post for an answer above. Regards, "Mickey".
Primary care doctors won't give fiorinal with codeine anymore. You have to go to a neurologist. For any controlled substance, you have to go to a specialist.
I am experiencing the same problem. I've been totally miserable past couple months. I believe it should be left up to the patient to decide what works for them. What happened to our freedom in the United States??
I have had migraines since i was 8 yr. old and i am now 73. I was given Fiorinal /with codine and it;s the only drug that ever worked but my Dr. doesn't seem to want to give them to me. She said they didn't let you have them anymore. How do i find someone to help me
As a chronic tension/migraine sufferer for the better part of 30 yrs, and having used this medication successfully for 20 plus yrs - I have a few things I can share with you. First, you have to find a doc that will address, "quality of life" and has a great trust relationship with you. If both these are present, you should be able to negotiate a prescription, based on your needs.
You also must be open to trying other things. I cannot tolerate the normal triptans, due to heart and bp issues, so I'm somewhat limited. Two meds that will help with this as a rescue are, low dose elavil 25 to 50mg at night, and some type of beta blocker.
Hope this is of help.
Mike
I am in need of Fiorinal 3 for migraine headaches. Doctors seem to not give them for some reason even though they make make my life much more liveable. I am even on disability because of them. Any help please.
