Fentanyl Side Effects/stopping

I herniated a disc in Feb 2011 that didn't respond to a microdiscectomy, so was going thru intensive PT before deciding whether or not to do a fusion. Well, in early Dec of 2011, I came down with Guillian-Barre Syndrome, a rare syndrome where your immune system attacks your peripheral nervous system. Recovering from GBS can be extremely painful. My case left me temporarily paralyzed from the waist down and I've been I'm the wheelchair for almost 9mos. I have a wonderful therapist and am using my walker more and more each week. Anyway, I've been on oxycodone 5mg and tramadol since Oct and the pain relief has been minimal. So, my PCP (handling pain meds in lieu of ortho right now- not seeing ortho until GBS "gets fixed.") put me on the 50ug fentanyl patch. The first one went OK- some minor dizziness at the beginning, but that resolved really soon. Well, the 2nd one went on last nite and today was h***. I couldn't move my.head w/o extreme dizziness & nausea, the room had.to be cold & dark, etc. When my hubby came home at lunch, he suggested I dispose of the patch (which I properly did) and now, about 3 hrs later, I feel slightly better but still really crappy. I plan on calling my doc.1st.thing in the AM, but do I need to call now? I don't expect that an on-call doc would do anything anyway. I had taken maybe 1 or 2 Oxy ea day for the breakout pain but plan on going back to it every 6hrs until they talk toe tomorrow. Most horrible day ever! Even when I was at my worst with the flu that almost killed me, it wasn't this bad!

I agree going from 5 to a 50 is quite a leap, were you experiencing pain described as a 10?? I'd tread carefully with your oral dose so low. Does G.B. affect your absorption rate or gastrointestinal issues by chance??
The problem with Fentanyl is that it is very potent, it's over 80 times stronger than Morphine, which means it's also much stonger than the Oxycodone that you were taking, probably about 50 to 60 times stronger.

Why didn't your doctor just try a stronger dose of Oxycodone? You were only on 5mgs, so there is plenty of room to go up on it.
