Fentanyl Q48 But My Doc Claims Fda Says No More Q48
UpdatedI have been prescribed Fentanyl every 48 hours for a few years now. Since this latest CDA recommendation, my pain clinic doctor has reduced me from 100mcg down to a 75mcg, and he claims he is required by CDA to lower me even more! I have severe chronic pain and I am 56 years old. But he claims the CDA wants all his patients drastically reduced or taken off meds. When I researched that claim and showed him that the CDA has only made suggestions, he is now saying the FDA doesn't want Fentanyl to be prescribed q48 anymore - he says he is now going to make me go a full 72 hours!! I cannot be reduced any further, I can barely function at work as it is because the pain is no longer under control now. Is he lying to me? How can they mandate Fentanyl must be worn 72 hours when there's so much evidence that they do not last longer than 2 days?? How can they mandate such cruelty to withold pain relief to those who have a proven and legitimate need for opioid pain meds? I would rather die than suffer this pain without relief going forward. If this is where pain doctors are heading, then I'm sure I will soon be checking out.

Are there many other pain doctors who are drastically and inhumanely reducing patients' pain medication? Are there others who were once prescribed Fentanyl every 48 hours now must wait 72 before putting on new patch - thereby suffering one whole day in agony & unable to function? I need to know if I am doomed, or should I be changing doctors? Please help.
Hello, Dee! How are you? I am very sorry about what you're having to deal with.
Yes, this is happening all over the U.S., so it isn't just you. There have been many posts about similar issues.
The DEA has actually issued a press release and issued a statement in the Federal Register that they are reducing the amount of most opioids that will be allowed to be manufactured in the U.S. by 25% or more, starting in January of 2017. Basically this means that everyone is having their dosages reduced and some people's doctor's are cutting them off entirely.
Does anyone else have any ideas of suggestions that may help?
Dee,
The answer to your question is YES.Verwon is correct, its not a punitive measure levied upon you by your current provider.Sadly this is the direction physician's are required to follow.Begining in early 2017 a further reduction of 25% becomes effective so things for most will only deteriorate further. Please do NOT feel you did anything improper it's just the current climate of pain control or the lack there of in this country.I wish I had better news to report...... God speed........
I am also a Chronic Pain Patient and been put on the 25 mg. patch. They ARE suppose to last 72 hours but mine give out at 48 hours! I realize the DEA has there head's up their, well, you know where. There are over one million of us CPP's and that's what is causing people to go to the streets or suicide! I don't have the answer either but suicide isn't the answer either!
