Expiration Date Sulfamethoxazole

the clinic i used to go to for 15 years closed down and my doctor also is gone so i am at a new clinic which has at this time only nurse practicioners and my old doctor had me on generic bactrim 500 mil. twice a day for 5 days once a month. . i have had problems and i only have one bottle left from old doctor and the bottle expired 12-2016. Can i safely take it since i am not getting the help i need and i know my old doctor would have prescribed it for me

This is an antibiotic that is used to treat, or prevent bacterial infections. Why are taking it 5 days a month, every month?

The FDA lists its typical side effects as possibly including nausea, dizziness, headache, non-allergic skin rash, and diarrhea.

As to the medication, as dispensed in a bottle by your pharmacy, it is good for one year from the date you receive it, because that exposes it to the elements that cause degradation, such as heat, light, and moisture. After that it does not become dangerous, but it may start to lose efficacy.
