Hi Ruth,
The only potential problem I see with taking expired penicillin is not so much about the safety of the drug itself, but in terms of losing efficacy overtime, a less potent antibiotic inevitably creates a greater risk for developing antibiotic resistant bacteria. And for that reason alone I think it would probably be a good idea to invest in a fresher prescription that has retained more of its potency -(depending on what your storage conditions were like over the past 5 and half years).
I hope this helps! Does anyone else have a different view from personal experience? I know some types of medications do retain potency for quite some time (i.e. 10+ years), but I'm not sure if penicillin is one of them.
