Dr Shopping Ignorance

I almost passed away in 2012..I saved someone's life and my head was smashed. I had to learn to walk and talk properly again and have continual pain. I get a script for roxicodone monthly from my doctor..pcp. I also see a dr that does a laser on my right eye and face...I had horrible double vision and was supposed to lose the eye. I barely see double out of it at all now but it seems to of plateaued and won't get better. He prescribed me a low dose of oxy and methadone...I told him I still see pcp monthly and he gave me the impression that it was to supplement what I'm on...I was on a ridiculous amount the first 6 months afterwards and figured that this that after I said I wanted to cut down its too much thqt this kept me sleeping at night and can tolerate pain throughout the day. My fiance is a rn and I told her I think I'm gonna quit getting the laser on my head bc it doesn't seem to help anymore. I then said I can live with only the roxicodone from my pcp I don't get many from the other doctor anyhow and I'd like to try and cut back again...but the methadone does help me sleep...she looked at me like I stabbed her and said I'm an i****...she then explained that is illegal and I can get in alot of trouble..and alot of other choice words...I honestly was oblivious to this and didn't think anything of it....especially bc the other doc knew I was seeing my npcp and what I got from him. I don't want any legal problems and immediately dropped the doc who did the laser... Am I in trouble? I live in Pa and is my pcp going to kick me out? I still have pain and don't want to be penalized for my ignorance....

Dr. Shopping is when someone deliberately sees more than one doctor to try to get multiple prescriptions for their medication of choice, it does not apply if all doctors are aware of who else you are seeing, and what else is being prescribed. The only way you should have an issue is if you'd signed a pain management contract with one, or both, that stipulates that you cannot receive medications from any other doctor, while they are treating you.

RN, or not, your girlfriend's reaction was uncalled for, and unnecessary.

You can learn more bout doctor shopping here from the CDC.

Is there anything else I can help with?
