Doxycycline Hyclate 20 Mg Can This Be Used For Tooth Abscess?
UpdatedNo money right now for a dentist and I have a new bottle of doxycyline hyclate in 20 mg form (using for acne) pill says lci on one side and 1336 on the other, small round white. I have a tooth abscess and want to know if I can increase the dosage safely to 100 mg per day to fight the infection?

@Jason,
Based on my research, Doxycycline can be used for a tooth abscess. The usual adult dose for a severe bacterial infection is listed at 100mg orally every 12 hours for 7 to 10 days; (but the 100mg may also be taken once daily as a "maintenance" dose for less severe infections).
My only question to you would be do you have enough pills to run a full course of treatment, in order to fully eradicate the infection? The last thing you'd want is drug resistant bacteria, so I do hope you're able to pull this off. Personally, I've found that clove oil and pure vanilla extract also work great for relieving minor pain and discomfort associated with tooth infections.. so that may be something to look into as well if you need to seek other means of treatment.
I do have a full bottle of 60 pills so if I take 5 per day to equal 100 mg, then that would give me 12 days which should be long enough.
I just wasn't sure if the (periostat) 20 mg can be taken in a higher amount to be effective against a bacterial infection. I couldn't really find any definitive answer to what the defference was between a 100 mg doxycycline hyclate and a 20 mg doxycycline hyclate tablet.
I had my bottom molar removed a couple months ago. It was healing slowly. About one month following the extraction I endured some sudden discomfort after feeling a pop in the right side of my jaw. I wasn't sure if I had accidentally grit my teeth or snapped my jaw bone in half! The sound scared me! The next day I was already swollen. Now after several visits to the oral surgeon & ER, I have been doing some research on myself. Several years ago I treated a merchant-cellulitis with doxycycline and finally overcame my illness. They have not given me anything to kill the infection now present in my jaw bone. More commonly known as osteomyelitis. I know that's what's stopping my healing progress but wasn't sure if it would be strong enough to also allow me to reject having another facial surgery where he basically lances and drains the colony of bacteria pooling directly around my entire haw bone area?
