Re: Glen (# 13) Expand Referenced Message

Glen, you got it right for migraine sufferers! During my 10 yrs in Brazil it alleviated my pain much better, with little to no side effects, than any of the medication prescribed to me on the US. Helped with muscle spasms too! When we travel to Brasil to visit in-laws I always bring some back.

The removal of metamizol-based products in US was completely about money and to promote Tylenol. Check pubmed for peer-reviewed journals comparing their safety profile. Tylenol/Advil, etc. are way more dangerous, involved in an alarming number of hospitalizations. The dosage of metamizol (dipyrone) in Neosaldina is safe enough. Those reports of agranulocytosis are nowhere near epidemiologically representative. It's a pity we don't have the same autonomy to choose here in US. Suffering from a migraine right now and can't take anything OTC here or my ulcers would cause way too much pain :(

The FDA banned metamizole in 1977 because of a rare but serious side effect of agranulocytosis (a severe decrease in white blood cells) which can lead to increased risk of infection and even death. In 1999, in a very public case, Selene Seguros Rios, an 18-moth old girl died after receiving metamizole. Although many countries, Brazil included, still use products containing metamizole because of its strong analgesic and fever reducing properties, the benefits are not worth the risks. Please be cautious when buying medications from other countries. Do your research and consult a physician. Just because it is over the counter in some countries, it doesn't mean it's safe!!!
