Dog Bite, Puncture Wounds, Antibiotic Of Choice

I suffered 4 puncture wounds to my middle finger from being bitten by a Pit Bull a couple days ago. Since the pit was going after my beagle puppy and I knew the pit would kill him, I slipped my hand under the pit bull's collar. He pulled me onto my back and bit my hand. I was screaming, but still holding onto his collar My black lab, Lucy has never fought but she is very loyal and protective of me. Prior to this incident, the only thing she attacked because she perceived it as a threat to me, was the weed eater. But she jumped the Pit Bull and wasn't about to give up the fight till she knew I was okay. I was at the bottom of this dog pile and had no idea what kind of injuries Lucy was sustaining. Long story short, my left hand has 4 punctures and is very swollen, purplish in color and very painful. I took pharmacology 1 & 2 in college years ago. I was thinking Keflex was the drug of choice for dog bites. But I was given Augmentin today. The only allergy I have is to Sulfa (Bactrim). So my question, Is AMOX-CLAV 875 mg BID x 14 days the first choice in puncture-type dog bites?

I am so sorry about what happened. How is Lucy?

We have a little chihuahua/schipperke mix and he wanted to take on an Akita one day, it was terrifying.

Yes, Augmentin is the current antibiotic of choice to treat or prevent infection from animal wounds.

The FDA lists the typical side effects of this antibiotic as possibly including nausea, dizziness, headache, non-allergic skin rash and diarrhea.

Is there anything else I can help with?
