Does Amoxicillin Go Bad With Age? (Page 6) (Top voted first)
UpdatedI bought 100 amoxicillin caps about 3 years ago and stored them in a dark place and I was curious if they would still be good to take.
its not the antibiotics that are expensive it is the urgent care visit.
i know whats going around in the comunity and i also know my own body
when i can get over it on my own or when its time to get antibiotics.
although you shouldn't self diaganoise i feel that i know im not allergic to it and im not on any other perscriptions so i feel its safe for me. But i also know when i need to go to a doctor.
3 year old yogurt would only be more yogurty, not necessarily bad, since all it is made of is bacteria. Seriously though, yogurt can be eaten months after the date on it, meds and yogurt are not a good comparison. But as someone who eats foods after the date and takes meds that are expired, I know full well that they still work, but you do have to worry about how effective they will be, and you don't want to only half kill an infection.
My dentist gave me the prescription for this and it expired 2 weeks ago. I know I have a UTI and rather than go to the doctor in 3 days which is when he can see me, I am going to take it.
My dentist gave me the prescription for this and it expired 2 weeks ago. I know I have a UTI and rather than go to the doctor in 3 days which is when he can see me, I am going to take it. I have to take it when I go to the dentist because I had knee replacements.
my amoxicillin was filled 02/13/13, and expires 02/12/14
is it still alright to use?
The reason amoxicillin is often left around is because people with artificial knees, hips, etc., must take a high dosage (4 x 500 mg capsules) before a dental cleaning or other treatment where bleeding is involved. Infection will head straight to those sites and replacing a knee replacement is horrific and sometimes impossible.
I have 2 knee reps and keep Amox around for dental visits or other bleeding emergencies.
Some people have asked in this thread about the liquid form still being good after it has expired... In general, DO NOT try to use the liquid forms of ANY medication after they have expired. This of course will also depend if it was reconstituted, and it's reconstituted stability at certain temperatures. There is a higher risk of liquid medications developing dangerous effects past expiration. It is VERY different having a liquid medication vs a tablet or capsule. I completely endorse the safety of taking expired AMOX caps, but definitely not liquid. If a liquid is a few days or maybe even a week past the expiration, CALL A PHARMACIST. It's free advice from someone who is often much more qualified than any MD regarding medications. Ultimately, just take whatever is in that bottomless medicine cabinet. Worse case scenario, survival of the fittest. Hopefully, that includes common sense and logic. ;-)
We live on an island and it's very hard to get good medical treatment. Sometimes it's hard to get medications there and because our health insurance is in the USA we have to pay for things ourselves. We take amoxicillin along with ear drops, eye drops etc. Some times we have to self diagnose and hope it works and normally it does. There are many situations where someone might have to take medications they have "laying" around. I wouldn't be so quick to judge.
Ok i just had a tooth pulled and the dr gave me a script for amoxicixlin 500 for antiinflamitory purpose. I still have amoxicilin left over from my last dentist visit..its 2 years old and doesn't expire till 2018 that what it says on bottle. Is it still safe to take ????
How long past expiration is liquid amoxicillin good for? The amoxicillin I have expired on 5/15
Some here on their elitist high-horses know nothing about it being prescribed as a prophylaxis. Anybody with damaged heart valves etc. must take them prior to a dental visit. You get a bottle of thirty to take 4 capsules 1 hour prior to the visit. Then the dentist decides how many, if any to take after the visit. You have up to 26 leftovers. They are good for future dental visits. Now in a refrigerator drawer, how long are they good for?
Not everyone has medical insurance & most places here wont see you without it. Some ppl who are next to being homeless dont have many options so they have to do what they
I have amoxicillin 875 mg it says discard after 10/2014 is this amoxicillin still good to take?
First of all why do you have to be rude? Either answer the question or don't. It's none of your business why.
However you are SUPPOSED TO TAKE the full course of the antibiotics when they are prescribed to you in order to prevent and treat the same infection from occurring again. Some antibiotics treat different things. So if you are taking amoxicillian for a bladder infection, it won't work
For those people that question why you would have amoxicillin "sitting around" in your medicine cabinet, there are various reasons other than an immediate infection for which it is used. Anyone who has had a hip replacement requires pre-dental appointment prophylaxis with amoxicillin. Often the doctor will prescribe enough to get you through a number of appointments, especially if you are having a dental issue, such as a root canal treatment. Also, people with cardiac issues, such as a ventricular septal defect will require prophylactic dental treatment. Hope this helps to clear up some concerns! BTW, I am an RN and, also, have had bother hips replaced!
I can tell you why I have left over Amox. A dentist prescribed it to me to take 4- 500MG before dental work but I did not need as many visits so have 8 of them left over. I have had Dr's. switch to different antibiotics mid course leaving some on my shelf. Having left over antibiotic often does not mean that you failed to take properly.
Finally someone actually answered the question – thanks.
I too have leftover Amox. Knee replacements require me to take 4 x 500mg capsules an hour before dental cleanings or fillings, crowns etc..
Doc prescribed sufficient for cleaning and follow up fillings, if necessary, which weren't.
Know-it-alls and ragers, please zip it so that questioners can get real answers.
