Doctor Who Prescribes Oxycodone In San Diego (Top voted first)
UpdatedHello I live in New Jersey. I have had two back surgeries and I currently am prescribed 30mg oxycodone for pain. Before you judge me just know I have tried everything non narcotic for pain and the only way I can even get out of bed is with pain killers. I am relocating to San Diego and I need a doctor who is not afraid to prescribe oxycodone. Please help!

Hello, Jay! How are you?
There are no guarantees that a new doctor will prescribe it for you. Due to the new regulations that were put in place last year, a general practitioner will not be able to prescribe it for you, so you'll need to see a pain management specialist.
The easiest thing to do would be to set yourself up with a new PCP, as soon as you arrive and have them refer you to someone. Make sure that you provide them with a full copy of your current medical records and ask your current doctor for a letter detailing what you take, why you take it, the dosage, dosing schedule and any other information they can include on what other medications may not have worked for you.
This is a narcotic analgesic, so it has the potential to be habit forming and may cause side effects, such as nausea, dizziness, drowsiness, dry mouth and constipation.
Does anyone else have any suggestions to add?
Hello Verwon,
Thanks for the response. I probably should have been a little descriptive in my post. I am well aware that I need a pain management doctor. I am very familiar with all of the laws both federal and state level. I know of the risk for abuse with a narcotic like oxycodone. I am Actually a social worker so I work with many people who are counselors for people struggling with drug addiction. I have been in pain management for several years. I can help anyone who has questions about pain management doctors in New Jersey or anyone who has questions on spinal fusion surgery. So please feel free to ask me questions. I am already aware of most of the information you provided. The problem with that plan is that my body has become physically dependent on the narcotics I get. It is actually very dangerous if I were to just stop taking them. So I cannot just arrive in California and "hope I find a doctor". Also it is very expensive to fly from nj to cali and back, so I am hoping to avoid a trip there specifically to find a doctor. I know that if someone is moving to New Jersey I could provide them with the names of several good pain management doctors and also the name of doctors to stay away from. The problem with finding pain management doctors who prescribe narcotics is that the business is still somewhat.....let's say 'taboo.' It's one of those businesses that even though there are people in the world like myself who have a graduate degree, have a good job and want nothing more than to just be pain free and not have to take any pills whatsoever, there are many seedy characters who are pain management patients. There are always going to be ways to beat their standard protocols with fake mri's or doctors who are corrupt and because these doctors are essentially prescribing something that is a derivative of H, pain management doctors are always going attract at least a small percentage of people who are....let's say 'not stand up human beings' and that's putting it nicely. It's a shame because it often ruins it for the rest of us, people like me who truly don't want to be on pain meds but simply have no other choice. For all of those reasons however, every good pain management doctor I have come across seems to keep a low profile. In other words none of them advertise. My current doctor cannot be found on the internet at all. It is all word of mouth and even still he is always turning away new patients. That being said it is very hard to move to a new place and find a good pain management doctor. It took me years to find the current doctor I have.
So the best way to find a pain management doctor is not actually the way you described. I am sure you mean well but that actually isn't very good advice. In my experience, most primary care physicians will attempt to try to solve your issue with out pain management before they ever give you a referral for a pain management doctor. Doctors seem to think they know better than the patient. So even though I have gone through several surgeries and years of ohsycial therapy and all types of holistic medicine and I know that opioids are the only thing that will take my pain away, a doctor who meets me for the first time will always insist that 'they can help' or 'they have a better way I haven't tried.' So unless you have 6 months to jump through hoops from your PCP before they refer you to someone it isn't the best way to go about it. I have lived in several different states and my experience for the best way for finding a a new pain management doctor (if you cannot find someone to give you the name of a good pain management dr.) is as follows;
This is not for someone looking to score drugs who has never been to a pain management doctor before. This is for people like myself who have been in pain management and know it's the only thing that will work. Take a printed report of your MRI and a copy of your most recent prescription and go around to various pharmacies in the new city you will be living in. Ask to speak to the pharmacist. Tell them you have just moved to this state but show them these are the prescriptions you have been taking. Show them a copy of your MRI report (it helps to highlight the lines they need to see). Tell them you are trying to find a doctor in the area who will prescribe this medication. Pharmacists see prescriptions from just about every doctor in the area so they know best. The problem is that it is illegal for a pharmacist to actually recommend a specific doctor. It is considered a type of collusion. So don't be afraid to hear no. But keep trying. Just keep going from pharmacy to pharmacy and eventually someone who either doesn't care about the law or is unfamiliar with the lAw will recommend someone.
That is what I will do when I move to CA but even then it can take a month or two to get an initial appt and that is a long time to wait especially if you end up finding out the doctor will not prescribe what you need. Then it could be another 2 months before you get another appt with someone else. I am really hoping someone can give me to the name of a doctor before I move so I can send all of my info via fax and have them ready to take me the day I move. If anyone in San Diego is able to recommend someone I will greatly appreciate it. Thank you.

I really wish you the best of luck!
Please, can anyone recommend a doctor in that area? :-)
