Doctor Forced Oxycodone Reduction
UpdatedI was prescribed a quantity of 140 10mg oxycodone and 60 40mg oxycontin a month for chronic and severe back pain. I lost my job and insurance which caused me not to be able to afford my prescription for oxycontin which was around $750. I could only afford to get 14 of them. I had to deal with a little more pain than usual, but I was able to get through the month because I was able to lay in bed most of the time and go through minor withdrawls. When I went in to see the Doctor the next visit and told him what happened and how I could no longer afford the oxycontin, he said I broke the contract and then would only prescribe me 180 of the 10mg oxycodone.( I later realized that I did not break any contract, my insurance did!! ) While I was there I told him I would be starting a new job and that I would try to get through the month with the significantly lower dosage. I did not make it the month because my new job is even more physical than my last one. I ended up in the same day clinic to ask for more because my doctor was on vacation. The physician gave me a prescription for 40 more 10mg oxycodone's. When I went in to see my doctor again and I told him what happened, he still would not give me anything more than 180 10mg oxy's. He told me to make them last. That's like telling my pain to go away when I feel like it. If I could make my pain go away I would need no doctor or pills! Why is he doing this to me? My research shows that oxycodone and oxycontin are the same exact thing besides the way they are released into the body. So I have been forced into a reduction of 3800mgs of oxy a month down to 1800mgs. Why am I being forced into suffering? I feel as though he does not believe me or listen to me when I tell him how bad my pain is.

Your doctor does not view it as that way, you signed the contract, so they feel you should be responsible for maintaining your end of it. Most likely, they expected you to contact them about the issue, rather than just taking what you could afford, and making due. Since he didn't drop you as a patient entirely, and is still prescribing for you, likely means that he isn't entirely blaming you, but in some respects, his hands are tied. The government makes him account for all controlled substances he prescribes, and why, so if there is a breach of contract, for whatever reason, he is accountable, and will have to explain why he is still prescribing, and etc. If he steps out of line, he risks losing his license to practice medicine.
I know this doesn't help you, I am just explaining why he is likely doing this.
At this point, you have limited options, you can cooperate, while continuing to make them aware of how miserable you are, in hopes that in the future, they will raise your dosage, again; or you can try consulting a different doctor to see if they will take you on as a patient and help you.
As someone who also suffers chronic pain, I understand and empathize with what you are dealing with, but the way U.S. laws currently stand have really messed things for many people with intractable pain.
The FDA warns that opioid medications, such as Oxycontin, carry the risk of being habit forming, and may cause side effects, such as nausea, dizziness, headache, dry mouth, and constipation.
Does anyone else have any advice, or ideas that may help?
