Dilaudid For Cancer Pain (Top voted first)
UpdatedOur daughter has advanced stage IV double lung cancer which has metastasized all throughout her body. She is now on IV dilaudid for her severe pain. Works very well. What, as your opinion, is her outlook? Would like to know as much as we can about this medication (including its side effects). Thank you.

Dilaudid is a potent opiate narcotic that is used to treat severe pain. The FDA warns that it carries the risk of being habit forming and may cause side effects, such as nausea, dizziness, headache, constipation, and dry mouth.
Not being a doctor, I really can't speak as to her outlook, cancer is much more complicated to treat and eradicate, once it has metastasized.
Regarding the medication, I can tell you that studies have shown that providing such a patient with proper doses to manage pain does not hasten death, or cause other physical damage and palliative care if often the most important part of aiding them in beating cancer and recovering.
Is she on any other medications?
Thank you. We know that our daughter is in the last stages of cancer. However her will & positive outlook has proved all her drs. wrong. Thank you for your thoughts on her dilaudid IV medication. Our biggest concern at this point is for her to have the best quality of life possible, peacefulness & as little pain as possible. Thank you again.
