I keep searching and STILL don¨t have a straight answer. I am currently on 30mg, 3 times a day of OXYCODONE (legally prescribed) for horrific back pain..... ¿WHAT is the difference between the 2, if any, besides the NAME? oxycodone AND oxycontin........ PLEASE help me out! thanks! thanks!!

I know this is an old post but if my reply helps one person, then it's worth my time to type it out. I'm Not proud of the fact that I'm Very knowledgeable when it comes to prescription drugs, particularly "Pain Killers". Briefly: my experience goes back 30 years. It started when I was 18. In 1984 my first husband overdosed on opiates. Prior to his Death he was spending Every Minute of Every Day of his life shopping for pills or better known as "Making Doctor's" & I was witness to a Multitude of "Pain Pills". Being exposed to this environment, I found an interest in the life of "Pain Killers". Then, I (accidentally) found out my need was legitimate due to "Advanced Osteoarthritis". My "Osteoarthritis" is Genetic, the "Autoimmune Disease" is part of it too. I've been taking a combination of "Lortab" (Norco), Oxycodone/Contin & Phentinol Off/On (Mostly On) for a few Decades. Plus others for brief periods.
I've also taken (Separately) "Diet Pills" & "Sleeping Pills" (Barbiturates), Valium and a multitude of "Antidepressants". My first advice is "DO NOT EVER MIX" Barbiturates & "Pain Pills" such as Oxycodone/Norco or any kind of Pain pill with a sleeping pill, IT WILL KILL YOU!! As far as taking any kind of Pain pill w/diet pills are concerned...... Well, it's basically a waste of pills, money and time. The "Diet Pill" will cancel out the pain pill. "Pain Pills" are considered "A Downer" & "Diet Pills" are an "Upper". (Betcha can't tell I grew up in the 70's/80's). So if you're finding your Pain Pills aren't working and that you're needing to take more & more Pain Pills to get "Pain Relief" but also taking "Diet Pills" that would be the reason why you're STILL in PAIN!! Basically if you're trying to lose weight Via Diet Pill BUT, you're always in Pain...... Figure out a different Diet Plan.
Also, if you Don't "REALLY" have a legitimate reason for taking ANY kind of Pill & you're just popping pills in order to take away the Hell's of Reality "STOP IT!!" Or you'll end up like my first Husband.
As far as the difference between "Oxycodone" & "Oxycontin" are concerned - Oxycontin are time released Oxycodone. If you take them as prescribed they're safe. IF you take an "Oxycontin & and you Smash it or chew it up you have a HUGE chance of Overdosing. The Oxycontin have Little Tiny Bead like balls inside. Each little bead or ball has a certain amount of the narcotic inside. For example, if you have a 30 mg. Oxycontin, each little bead had (approximately) 30 Mg's of narcotic inside. So you would be taking 30 times 30 of the narcotic ALL AT ONCE. The Oxycodone is just one dose / one time. IF you have No Idea of what you're doing Ask Your Doctor. OR...... Hey, you could even call some Random Pharmacy. They will be honest with you and tell you the wise steps to take regarding "Pain Management"....Above All - Stay Safe.

PLEASE WHEN U DO MAKE SURE YOU DON'T DRINK NOR DRIVE. BOTH TOGETHER WILL HELP U SLEEP GOOD AT NIGHT WHEN ALSO USING THE MUSCLE RELAXERS N MOTRIN FOR SWELLING EVERY 6 HOURS. I USED TO THINK THAT THE OXYCONTIN DIDN'T WORK UNTIL I STOPPED USING IT. IT WAS ONLY THEN THAT I NOTICED I NEEDED BOTH THE OXYCONTIN N OXYCODONE FOR MY SEVERE PAIN ALONG WITH THE GABAPENTIN AND MOTRIN TO MAKE ME FEEL LIL NORMAL TO MAKE ME WANT TO GET UP AND DO THINGS. AS ALWAYS WHEN TAKING ANY MEDICATIONS PLEASE EAT. WHEN U DO EAT A MEAL ALONG WITH MEDICATIONS IT WILL MAKE THE MEDICINE WORK EFFECTIVELY.

Hi, sorry you're having such spine troubles. When that back goes it's a real b**** and for those that DON'T have back troubles they will never understand.. The only difference is time release and time it lasts. Oxycontin is an ER medicine.. Where as oxycodone is the name of the active ingredient in both meds.. For future reference when you see IR this indicates Immediate release medicine. Hopefully this helped some. If you have questions just hollar..most folks are injured and have tried one pain med at some point or another and are very helpful.

They're both the same exact drug just different do sagging. Oxycontin tends to be 80mg and above but honestly a 15mg oxy is same thing, just lower dosage. Sorry you had a hard time finding an answer it's really very simple to Google. They're phasing out Oxycontin if they've not done so completely by now, but your getting the exact same active ingrediant,,,oxycodone. Hope that helps. Medicsturch!

Your are misinformed. Oxycodone and Oxycontin do not contain any tylenol. It's on the bottle under 'dosage' you would see the strength listed, something like this 30/375. 30 being the oxy and 375 being the tylenol. Percocet, vicodin, norco, and hydrocodone are all labeled like this because they contain both substances. Oxycodone and oxycontin are only labeled as 5, 10, 30, 90..? etc without a "/mg" of tylenol at the end. This is how you know there is no tylenol. I cant take tylenol so they put me on straight oxy instead of something like percocet or hydrocodone or norco. I hope this helps clear things up.

Percocet is quick acting. Oxy ER releases over time(12hr). The percs will last you anywhere from 3-4 hours while the ER is 12. You will have to take more percs cause they wear off. The ER is 2x a day only. Percs have Tylenol(acetaminophen) and the ER is oxy only. Hope this helps you

Hey Jill?? I just came across your message and I am here in Houston myself...
I know you wrote this way back in 2011 but, I was wondering if you had any luck finding any help. Things here in Houston have gotten very difficult nowadays. I'm only 32 years old. I had shingles twice before I was 30 and now suffer from severe rheumatoid arthritis with fibromyalgia. For me being my age these doctors are so damn judgmental it's sick. I had an amazing doctor I'm up here on the northwest side near 1960 and 2920. During his lunch break before he left the practice instead of taking lunch my doctor would go to the veterans hospital and help in the burn unit ... I felt so blessed to have him as a doctor because, when I found out he was leaving to be full time at the VA and he had treated me with so much respect and never look down upon me. I knew that he was a doctor for the true legitimate reason of being someone who wants to help others.. I thought it was the most admirable thing that he could have done, but the practice he worked for completely cut off all of his pain patients and didn't even refer them out....
This happened to happen during the holidays too... so not only having to find a new PCP but, they want to send you to every specialist on the planet. I've went to two pain doctors in the last 3 months one of them being today. I was so insulted because, I'm a very straight-laced woman and I felt completely profiled and judged. Have you had that problem here too? Anyhow, I have been on 30 milligrams oxycodone instant release and 10 325 hydrocodone 4 in between times. Trust me I went from the fentanyl patch, morphine.. yes I felt like a lab rat LOL. Finally, my doctor had went out on a limb and tried a new regimen for me, a 3 years later it's been working wonders. I'm a single girl who was making six figures a year working in oil and gas as the underwriting accountant to having to go on disability full-time. So things are used to take for granted even the smallest things I'm so thankful for now.

From one woman to another I understand your frustration and totally understood where you were coming from. If you have any suggestions sweetheart, toss them my way, please and thank you. I'm just a person that would like to go to my God son's soccer game once in awhile my goodness. Why do I have to look like the worst person in the world every time I go see a doctor it's disgusting. On top of all of that, I have no other family besides a dad.. all we have is each other...God Bless My Poor Dad he stays with me and he's suffering from degenerate disc disease and also prostate cancer and they're not even helping him for god sakes...
I do have a good handful of doctors I know that are very knowledgeable and understanding problem is they do not take my insurance :-(...

So "Cherrie" doesn't like Oxycontin. For me, they have been a lifesaver (literally) for 15 years. I went from spending my days huddled under heating pads in a recliner to living a life that is much closer to "normal", without the constant agony and thoughts of suicide. Everyone responds differently, it's true, but try things for yourself. Don't assume that what the pain reliever that was "bad" for one person won't end up being the medication that saves your life.
