Diarrhea After Prolia

I have severe osteoporosis, have lost SEVEN inches off my height, and look like a turtle with the big hump on the back. My specialist recommended Prolia which I started two years ago. After the first shot I got severe diarrhea starting about ten days later. I had been treated with an antibiotic so my Dr. thought that was the cause. After the second shot the diarrhea came back and the Dr. recommended Align probiotics (and any others I cared to take --"the more the better"). This helped and I have taken three probiotics a day every day since. I had my last shot in August and am again suffering with horrible diarrhea. I will NOT get another shot of this poison--I have heard it causes gluten allergies so guess I will try a gluten-free diet to see if it will help. I am sure you all are aware that a gluten-free diet is expensive! I certainly did not need this at this time in my life.

Hello Jeena,

I'm really sorry to hear that you are having such a terrible time with each of these shots. I find it really odd that your specialist didn't think that the prolia was causing diarrhea since it's one of the most common side effects of the medicine according to the NIH. Regardless, this isn't an allergic reaction to the medicine and is a known and fairly common adverse reaction to the drug, I can't tell you whether or not you should continue taking the shots but if it was working it is worth deliberating if the benefits are worth the diarrhea.
