Decreasing Sinemet

I have been taking sinemet 25/100 for parkinsons. I was taking 8 a day with dr. permission. I began taking more without permission to ward off what i call parkinsons attacks. My dr scolded me and told me to try to go back to 8. I feel the need for another doe before time for the scheduled dose if i only take 8 a day. I realize its like withdrawl from drugs. but do you have any suggestions for me to keep feeling ok without the extra pills?

Sinemet doesn't work that way, actually. You can't just randomly take more some days to ward off symptoms. For it to be effective a consistent dose needs to be taken daily for about 4 to 5 weeks.

It also won't cause severe withdrawal symptoms, since it's not a habit forming medication and you're still taking several a day.

You may experience some mild effects from lowering back to the normal dose, which could include rebound Parkinson's symptoms.

I know it's hard, but you're really just going to have to set yourself on a strict schedule of the prescribed amount each day.

The typical side effects of this medication may possibly include nausea, constipation, dizziness, drowsiness, dry mouth and headache.

How many were you taking at the maximum and how long were you taking that many? That may change things, it may be better for you to taper back down, if your doctor approves.

I'm sorry, I want to apologize, I think my post seemed rather harsh and that's not what I intended.

However, 8 tablets is the maximum approved daily dosage and I really don't want to see your harm yourself by continuing to take too many.

What types of symptoms were you having that you considered an attack?
