Cotrimoxazole Ds 800-160 Tab

was given to my son with another antibiotic. because an infected abscess.can be taken both at the same time?.is cotrimoxazole ds an antibiotic?why so many doses of antibiotics, is this necessary?

Hi Lisa,

In order to answer your first question (regarding taking both together), I would need to know the name of the other antibiotic medication that your son is taking.

And yes, Co-trimoxazole is a sulfonamide "antibiotic" combination of Sulfamethoxazole + Trimethoprim, that is used in the treatment of a variety of bacterial infections.

Usually the reason for so many antibiotics at once is to make sure the infection is completely killed. If one of the antibiotics were to fail and cause antibiotic resistance, then there would be a backup to help prevent that from happening. Your son shouldn't be prescribed these for more than roughly 7-10 days, as that is generally how long it takes to kill a really bad infection. Sometimes is necessary and sometimes the doctor may just be taking extra precautions based on his previous experiences.

Alternatively, I would recommend looking into 100% pure therapeutic grade essential oils for future infections, without the side effects of prescription drugs.
