Confused Blood Pressure Meds

Updated March 23, 2012

I used to have good blood pressure relief with Atacand HCT 32 strength . The doctors now seem to prefer lisinopril. I thought they were very similar and am thinking of asking to switch back. Has Atacand fallen out of favor for some reason?

No, it hasn't fallen out of favor, per se, but doctors do tend to prefer to prescribe the medications they are most familiar with.

I've been in the ER before and had a doctor give me an attitude questioning the medications I am on, because one is Atacand and it's just not the first choice to be used, anymore. However, I refused to let them make changes or carry on about it, figuring that my cardio doc knows best and she really worked closely with me for about a year, until we found the right medications for me that worked, without making me severely ill.

Thus, it may just be a matter of telling your doctor that the Atacand/HCTZ worked better for you and you would prefer to use it.

Frankly, looking at it from the standpoint of someone who knows a lot about medications, since this is what I do, I have to wonder why Lisinopril is the first choice, so often, anyway, due to the fact that the Candesartan in the Atacand is known to cause much fewer side effects in most people than the Lisinopril does.

When I first got out of the hospital, they had me on Metoprolol and it caused me a ton of problems, so I had to stop taking it and Lisinopril was the next one we tried, however, it was just as bad. Thankfully, my doctor is very understanding of how sensitive some people can be to medications and their side effects, so when I contacted her about a problem, she was always ready to scrap the likely culprit and find an alternative. She would much rather keep me alive and healthy, than to risk my getting disgusted and stopping medications that my life depends on.

If the Atacand/HCTZ really worked well for you and you feel better taking it, don't be afraid to express that to your doctor and remember, it is your body, not theirs. We have many people on our site that seem afraid to question their doctors, but when it comes right down to it, you know your body much better than they do.

This means that you know when something isn't right and if one doctor won't listen, then keep going, until you find one that does.

Feel free to post back, if you have any questions or need any other information.

For the record, I still use Atacand, though compared to the other medications, it actually worked too well for me and we had to keep lowering the dosage, so I only take 8mgs twice a day, now. :-)
