Hello my name is Heather. My Moms doctor put her on 50 mg fentanyl patch every 3 days and xanax as well 3 times a day. I am extremely concerned about her taking this combo. She has rheumatoid arthritis. Can anybody give me any info please?

Hello, Heather! How are you? How is your mom?

What particular concerns do you have?

The FDA classifies Fentanyl as a narcotic analgesic, so it has the potential to be habit forming and may cause side effects, such as nausea, dizziness, drowsiness, dry mouth and constipation. It is very potent.

Xanax is classified as a benzodiazepine, so it also carries the risk of being habit forming and could cause side effects, such as nausea, dizziness, headache and irritability.

The main concern with taking both is that they both increase sedation, so her doctor should be carefully monitoring her and her doses should have been adjusted accordingly.
