Can You Take Oxycodone 7.5/325 Every 3 Hours

My mother is 74 yrs old. Had rotator cuff surgery 4 days ago. Had to take her to the ER on day two. There they gave her an IM Dilaudid shot and sent her home. Called the doctor on call the next day and ask if they could admit her for pain management, he proceeded to tell me that the insurance would not pay for it. Post-op surgery they gave her Percocet 7.5/325 1-2 every 4-6 hours for pain. To make a long story short. Two was too strong so she had the 5-325 and took two every four hours and that would help her pain level which would be tolerable at 5. This is 3900mg of tylenol. Too much in only 24 hours. So this is why I am asking if you can take the Percocet 7.5/325 every 3 hours?

Hello, Debbie! How is your mom doing?

Since this is a narcotic, the FDA warns that it carries the risk of being habit forming, so it would best to not adjust her dosing, without her doctor's approval.

There shouldn't be a problem doing it that way, but I can't definitively say, since I don't know her entire medical history and I am not a doctor.

Other side effects may possibly include nausea, dizziness, headache, dry mouth and constipation.

Is there anything else I can help with?

Thanks for your reply! I did get her back to her family doctor yesterday, and they are switching her to Percocet 10/325 every 4 hours which gives her half the Tylenol she was taking. She is feeling better now and her pain is under control. Thanks again!

I hope things are getting better in the pain department. Please remember that if your pain is severe your doctor can order oxy IR which is oxycodone without the tylenol. I'm currently taking that for my rotator cuff tear.

I was given a dosage of 5/325 hydrcodone on 8/11 to take 1 to 2 pills every 4 hrs I was given 20 pills,so today I was given 30 hydrcodone but the pharmacist said I could not pick them up til the 22 of aug this does sound right to me.

No, it doesn't make sense. It sounds like the doctor expects you to NOT take the max possible dosage of the first rx. Which you shouldn't, tbh. You should take one pill at first, wait to see how well it works and only take a second after at least forty minutes, which is how long it takes for most pain meds to work, when taken by mouth (vs shot or IV).

But let's assume you try that and you need two pills to make the pain bearable. Not floating on clouds bliss, but bearable. So you need to take two pills of the original rx every four hours as prescribed, and you are awake twelve hours per day, and you take six pills per day and use up the original rx in less than four days.

Ouch. Literally.

However, you've been told you can't fill the new rx for eleven days. That would leave you with no pain meds for seven days. For your sake, practically speaking, I'd take one half to one pill, every four hours, to ensure you have sufficient meds for at least SOME relief for eleven days. Even if the pain is not particularly bearable, even if it's just barely jerking you from screaming and pulling out your hair. Because, if you take the max possible dosage you'd not only not have ANY meds at the end of the fourth day, your body and mind would also be forced to go from zero to sixty, pain wise, and you'd have little to no tolerance to the pain, having been at the max possible dosage for five days. Then you would end up screaming and pulling out your hair, and calling 911 or going to the ER, and ERs don't like to give it pain meds. This doesn't make sense either, but I'm aiming to give you a dose (haha) of reality, not sense.

As I said, it's very likely the Dr expects you to take less than the max dose and, moreover, that you will heal somewhat over days and your need for meds will decrease. That doesn't make sense, since it's the opposite of giving you a new rx which is only available in eleven days, but which inherently assumes you will NEED meds at that point.

Tio me,it sounds manipulative. Dr: "Hey, I know you don't NEED meds, so I'm going to grant your (drug seeking, irrational, bad patient) wish for more meds and write this useless rx, knowing you won't need it in eleven days, because I don't want to argue with you or take the time to explain things more thoroughly to you." If this mean Dr scenario seems unlikely to you, you haven't been on pain meds long, which is good and I hope you don't continue to need them. Doctors don't like dealing with pain patients, for various medical and legal reasons. It very much sucks for patients and it's not entirely the drs fault. Blame the DEA and write your Congress people, state and federal.

Another possibility is that your insurance won't cover two different pain rx's so close together, and the doctor knows this. This is unlikely, most insurance will cover a lot of controlled meds, and, anyway, doctors usually don't know each insurance policy that well. However, maybe you are going to a doctor that, say, only treats Medicaid or Medicare patients. Or you live in an area with very specific laws about pain meds.

The other possibility is that the doctor is telling you it can't be filled for eleven days but the rx is dated as of the date of your appt, in which case you can fill it immediately, if your ins will cover it or you can pay for it out of pocket. The only way the Dr can MAKE you wait eleven days is to post date the rx eleven days in the future. Drs can and do, do this. For instance, your Dr is a humanitarian who doesn't see why you should come in and pay a copay just to pick up a rx for a med you take regularly. For instance, drs may post date rxs for Adderall. I know many drs who do this.

Ftr, 'm well aware your question is over a year old. All the info I've given is directed to anyone who comes upon this thread in the future or to you, if you're still wondering, after all this time. Which I hope you're not, since I sincerely hope your pain is gone and was gone in a just a few days making both the first and second rx's irrelevant.
