Under current U.S. law, Methadone can only be prescribed to treat addiction by someone specially trained in it's use, and it must be done in a clinical setting. So, while it may be expensive and inconvenient, a Methadone clinic is the only option.
The FDA warns that it carries the risk of being habit forming and could cause side effects, such as nausea, dizziness, headache, dry mouth, and constipation.
Suboxone might be something to consider, since it doesn't require daily clinic visits.
