Can You Have A Reaction To Bactrim 9 Days Later?

started taking Bactrim over a week ago due to an acute kidney infection. Began to experience dizziness a day ago, pain behind the ears started on the left side with a bump and then felt pain on the right side the next morning. Body aches as well. Today I woke up with a rash all over my body that itches and almost has like a burning sensation. Can I take Benadryl with Bactrim to help with the rash?

Yes, you can experience an allergic reaction that late into a course of it. I had it happen to me 9 and a half days in, I had one dose left, but had to see my doctor and stop taking it. The sad thing is that when i got those bumps, which in my case were swollen glands, I went to the ER and the doctor there did not recognize it as an allergic reaction, so I kept taking it for a few more days, then the rash and hives appeared.

Generally, when you experience such an allergic reaction, the FDA advises you to stop taking it, because they can get worse with repeated exposure. Thus, there is a risk of your experiencing swelling of your throat, which could create trouble breathing.

How are you doing now?

The normal side effect of a non-allergic skin rash, would not be itchy and cause the burning sensation.
