Can This Be Used For Air Sickness?
UpdatedI'm a student pilot, and I had my first flight yesterday. Awhile into the flight after we hit some turbulence and started practicing descents I almost lost it. I was sweating profusely and felt extremely nauseous. So much so that my instructor had to take over the controls and open an air vent for me.
Anyways, I mentioned to him that I wanted to take Dramamine before the next flight but he told me that in the eyes of the FAA it is illegal to take any sort of medication while piloting an airplane. That's understandable since your functions may be impaired by certain drugs.
But I keep reading that Bonine is non-drowsy, and I remember taking it before going in a boat and did not feel any fatigue.
Can anybody else speak about this? Since Bonine is non drowsy, can it be taken prior to a flight lesson? I really want to be able to fly without the air sickness.
Thanks,
Nick

Nick, you can also try some natural alternatives. Ginger pills (capsules filled with ginger powder) are reported to work really well. They even did a mythbusters show about motion sickness and ginger was found to do the trick. Also, the FAA will allow you to take Emetrol as needed. It's just a syrup containing sugars and phosphoric acid. Make sure that you eat a light meal before flying (no dairy, high protein, or high in grease), and then you should be in great shape.

My wife, son and I just got back from a boat trip and we were very sick by counting on ginger as an alternative to Bonine!
In the past, Dramamine did not work for us since that it has that strong drowsy effect. Bonine worked beautifully. Nevertheless, I wanted to challenge myself thinking that I might have outgrown this motion sickness..So I bought a ginger crystals in a bottle and that was a big mistake for us. The motion sickness ws intense and the ginger gave me an acidic stomach. Bonine is the one for me and is the one that I would recommend to my friends!
If he said it is illegal, then it is illegal, without exception, I know there are some very rare exceptions for pilots on certain medications, but that's under very strict medical criteria. Not listening could result in your never being able to obtain a pilot's license.
Bonine does cause drowsiness, in some people that take it, according to FDA warnings, along with dizziness, dry mouth, and headache.
Gaby, I am glad that the Bonine worked for you, ginger does not effectively help everyone.
Is there anything I can help with?
