Hi Elaine,
From what I can gather, Sotalol is a beta blocker used for treating irregular heartbeats. There are however, a variety of different medications (OTC/Herbal/Rx) that are indicated for such purposes, so in my personal opinion, limiting yourself to just one type of treatment "should" not have to be a permanent/indefinite thing. On the other hand, it is up to you and your doctor to decide the duration of treatment as well as considerations for other treatment modalities.
With that said, I think it would be wise to weigh out the pros/cons of taking Sotalol in order to better determine whether continued treatment would be necessary. Your doctor may also want to taper off instead of stopping abruptly, since doing so may lead to potential withdrawal symptoms, as referenced in the link below:
