Breakthrough Bleeding On Loestrin

I've been taking this pill for nearly 4 years and I've never had a problem until now. I am having my first ever breakthrough bleeding. I know a lot of people have them and I'm probably worried over nothing, but because it's never happened before it seems a bit out of the blue! It's super painful and I'm going through tampons every hour or so. It literally poured out at first. I bled during intercourse the last time as well, that was about a month ago. I'm not due for a checkup for 6 months and it's difficult to get appointments so I don't want to go for no reason... Any ideas?

You really need to go have this checked out. That severe bleeding is not normal breakthrough bleeding for oral contraceptives and may be due to something else going on, possibly a hormonal imbalance as reported by the NIH.

Typical breakthrough bleeding on oral contraceptives can vary from a normal period flow to just spotting, as reported by the FDA, but it should not pour out like you described. It also should not be painful.

How old are you? Sometimes, bleeding during or after intercourse is a sign of starting perimenopause, which can start anywhere past age 35.

Thank you! I'm 22, it just happened for that one day, the next day I just spotted and the day after I was back to normal. It hasn't happened since but I'm going to get my cervix checked as I had it cauterized a year a go because of bleeding and abnormal cells and the bleeding during intercourse has started again. So if there is anything wrong hopefully it will get spotted!
