Have a 5 yr. old mixed breed rescue dog who has a severe chewing issue on her rear legs. Have been through food & environmental checks at Cornell Companion Animal Hospital; used specially formulated injections on a monthly schedule; used various sprays & lotions rubbed on the area recommended by our vet and none of this has worked! My husband was prescribed this compounded formulation for a severe skin itching problem and this cleared completely. Want to know if this would be safe to use on our dog?

Hi Joy Liese,

Based on my research, Betamethasone dipropionate can effectively treat itchy rashes and other inflammatory skin conditions in animals. A regular dosage of .25 to 0.5 milliliter per 20 pounds of body weight is usually recommended, but the dosage may depend on how severe the issue is. Only small amounts of this medication should be applied to the affected area.

In regards to the other ingredients, the menthol should be safe but I'm not sure about the phenol. You may want to call your vet and ask just to be certain.

Have you ever considered using essential oils on your dog? I've read about a lot of pet owners using specific oils (that are safe for animals) to treat all kinds of ailments. I love essential oils, so I just thought I'd throw it out as a suggestion.

I hope this helps! Please post back if this cream helps your pup, or if you have any questions. :)
