Bacterial Sinus Infection After Starting Antibiotics For Another Reason
Updatedi was recently prescribed bactrim (sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim) for an infected burn. on the second day, i woke up with a really sore throat. by night, i had a fever, and the next morning, i had a sinus infection--which i used to get chronically from about 11 years ago, up until 4 years ago, in which time ive only had one. a day later i had a productive cough, semi bad but nowhere near as bad as the bronchitus the sinus infections would, after months, eventually turn into.
those infectionswere clearly bacterial as whenever I did end up taking antibiotics, they always ended within a few days. I tried to ride them through to defer antibiotic resistance and such, and i cant rememeber if i ever did, because they WOULDNT go away. regardless, i went back to the dr this time after getting sick and they wanted me to keep on the antibiotics--he seemed to think it was coincidental, and said if i still had the infection at the end of the coruse (which i am approaching) i should come back in for another course of them; it is definitely not gettnig better as of now, and to me it seems like maybethe bacteria which cause the sinus infections in me are immune/somewhat immune to this antibiotic as they were present through previous courses and have now been allowed to become a majority/'run unopposed'. he prescribed predinizone, and i initially attempted to nasal irrigation, to no avail.

Hello, Cali! How are you?
Your doctor is most likely right and it was just coincidental, but that doesn't necessarily mean this was the correct antibiotic to eradicate that bacteria, so you may need to take another course of a different one. However, I don't think another course of the same one would be the best choice, but I am not a doctor.
Is there anything else I can help with?
What is the antibiotic typically used most in thx for a sinus infection?
There is no one specific antibiotic that's used. It depends on the type of infection, as well as its severity.
One person might do well with something such as Augmentin, but another person might need Bactrim.
Are there any other questions or concerns?
Typical antibiotic side effects may include nausea, dizziness, non-allergic skin rash, headache and diarrhea.
I've experienced the same side affects, while taking antibiotics (bactrim). After a day of the antibiotic regiment, I experienced pain in my sinuses and throat. My personal experiences point to the thought that this is not likely to be coincidental. This has happened several times, over the course of several antibiotic treatments (with different antibiotics). I've read other people's testimony, that point to a similar experience.
