Availability Of Bellamine-s (Page 2)
UpdatedAre Bellamine-S and similar drugs still available? My pharmacy can't find them, so if you know how and where you can get them, please let me know. Thank you.
Call around there ARE pharmacies that still have it. I just set my mind to it and with the computer and the telephone book, and I called til I found one store and then another that still had some on the shelf. One pharmacy even had a whole bottle of unopened pills! One was a Wal Mart and one was a CVS. I have taken Bellamine-S or Bellegral for almost 8 years. I have taken Tamoxifen or Aromasin for breast cancer and those drugs caused me to have terrible hot flashes. The Bellamine worked like a charm and I hate that it will be no more. I have even spoken with the pharmaceutical company. All of you need to KEEP TRYING!!!!!!!

I have found a compounding pharmacy in Oceanside, CA to make this medication. My doctor told me she had tried to find one with no luck. She is in another county. Any way I told the pharmacy to expect a few calls from her patients, because many of us would pay almost any price. I have not felt this normal in years. And sleeping with out night sweats, and hot flashes is a super plus. This medication has been around for years. My doctor said her father had prescribed it with much success for years and it is better than the adverse affects of hormones.
Anyone know why the FDA took this drug off the market? My mother was on Digitek which was recalled and the FDA has not done a very good job of letting the public know. People are getting real sick and dying. Would love to have some infor about this drug. I am another beleiver in this. It was a wonderful drug.
Many older drugs were available under the provision of Generally Recognized as Safe and Effective, which means they were approved before the modern FDA testing procedures. The FDA has in the past few years begun requiring these drugs to be submitted to the approval process, the same as newly created drugs. Since Bellamine was a generic drug (the brand name was Bellergal, which has not been available in years), the company probably had no procedures for getting a new drug approved (and it probably wouldn't be profitable anyway). So adios to the drug.
Please put bellamine-s back on the market, it has helped me a other ladies with hot flashes. This is the only drug that has worked for me.
This is in response to every post above. For some odd reason, I have not had a problem getting my prescriptions for Bellamine S tablets...not a generic either. I live in southern California, and I get my meds from CVS pharmacy. It costs less than $20 with insurance. Maybe they have a supply backlogged, but I am hoping it isn't discontinued.
I have been using dietary supplements since I cannot obtain any more Bellamine. Though I use them everyday, it is really not consistently helping he sweats during sleeping. I haven't tried having the pills formulated. I keep hoping that they begin reproduction of the medication! Until then, I am just tired all the time from lack of sleep.
I talked to my doctor about Bellamine being taken off the market. I'm on Belladonna-phenobarb eliquiker which helps, but it's as good as the Bellamine tabs. My doctor told me of a drug company that are working on generic drugs for some drugs that are no longer available. He was going to tell the rep about Bellamine. I hope we can find a way to get it back.
Thank you for the information. I do hope that you can get something accomplished in getting this medicine available again. Please put a post on here if you do; I get e-mails as new responses are put on here. I appreciate your help, for all of us who have been helped by Bellamine. Originally I was taking Bellergal-S, then Bellamine-S.
If you have your original RX compounded, can they do that from the original refill, or do they need a whole new RX? Just curious how that works. I have never had anything formulated before!
Good news! I got the Bellamine-S compounded at a local pharmacy and my insurance did pay for it. It was considered a 3rd teir drug, so the cost was $48.00, but I am sleeping much better! Definitely pursue the compounding route until the drug becomes available again!
This is the best medicine I've ever uesd. Helps me sleep, but doesn't make me a zombie. Helps my stomach too. I didn't realize it might be a problem getting it, I just now left a message asking my gynocologist if he would prescribe it for me again. I really, really need it. I haven't slept in weeks.
what is the compound for Bellamine-S. I am so exhausted from lack of sleep and hot flashes. Bellamine-S gave me my life back. What drug store makes it up? Please help!!!
I have not found anything on the canadian or us pharmacies that have Bellamine S. If anyone has found it on the internet or anywhere it's available please let us all know with an address or the info.
Please try Medicap Pharmacy...When CVS stopped carrying it I had a nurse at my doctor's office recommend trying them and they came thru. And...my insurance covers it.
I've been taking Bellamine-S since it was called Bellergal in 1972. I have post-traumatic autonomic dysfunction, called RSD and various other things. I am also on Clonidine patches, but for major flare-ups Bellamine is the only thing that works.
I am a psychiatrist who has found this drug to be helpful in selected patients over the years. Phenobarbital and ergotamine are too old to have been approved by the FDA; approval wasn't required when they were introduced. However, many drugs with phenobarbital and (at least the generic for) Cafergot, used to treat migraine, is still on the market. I suspect the drug simply wasn't selling enough! My nephew is a perfect candidate for Bellergal-S. Donnatal doesn't have enough belladone alkoloids to be effective and cintaines no ergotamine at all.
Regarding compounding: we have to write new scripts and they look almost like cake recipes! I have several patients that I concluded would be helped greatly by Dexamyl (Dexedrine and Amytal), which was pulled from the market by the FDA in 1975. (I've been doing this a long time - almost 35 years). Compounding is expensive, but I cut my fee by the amount they had to pay and found a neighborhood pharmacist who was willing and sufficiently skilled to do the job.
Just one more comment about compounding — as far as I know, only Florida permits the filling of scripts written by physicians licensed in other states. I'm licensed in New York and Florida, There seems to be a loophole (or a gentlemen's agreement) that permits NJ pharmacists in the NYC metropolitan area to fill our scripts. Phenobarbital per se is a Schedule IV Controlled Substance, so I have a feeling professional courtesy stops when a pharmacy has to place an unusual order for phenobarbital powder for compounding. Experienced compounding pharmacists are invaluable in helping us write these scripts. I remember they had a recipe all ready for topical Cleocin years before Cleocin-T and Cleocin Gel hit the market. My nieces and nephews thought I was SO cool to write for meds their friends' dermatologists told them were not yet available.
I live in Canada and my doctor recently prescribed Bellergal Spacetabs to treat my hot flashes which cause me to sleep very poorly, so I can tell you that they are available here in British Columbia.
