Apotex Vs Pliva Trazodone (Page 2)
(Newest replies first)

Updated

My pharmacy just switched manufacturers of my prescription trazodone 50mg. It used to be made by apotex now it is pliva and I am finding that the new pills are having little to no effect and I am starting to suffer discontinuation syndrome. I talked to my pharmacist and doctor and neither one could tell me what was causing this. I was just wondering if there is anyone out there who could shed some light on the subject.

My pharmacy also switched to apo t50 from pliva... And the t50s have no effect on me whatsoever... I'm filing a complaint with the FDA:

I have been taking Pliva trazodone, as needed, for sleep. Worked great, but my pharmacist switched from Pliva to Apotex and now it is not working for me.

I think our bodies adjust to a certain brand of Trazodone. But it will readjust to a new brand, it will only take time. I had to switch from the mfg Apotex to Pliva and had an awful time with my sleep. It took awhile but now the Pliva works for me. I am glad now as Apotex is not reliable in providing the Trazodone on a steady basis.

I am experiencing the same problem with the Pliva brand. I'm only able to get a few hours sleep. Anyone have any luck finding the Apotex generic? I fill my prescription at CVS. Been taking Desyrl/Trazadone for many many years. Preferred the brand one but that's not an option anymore.

Your difficulty sounds similar to what I experienced when Watson Labs ceased production of Trazodone. Their version was very good whereas Pliva's Trazodone–as well as the quality of many of the other makers– is disgustingly poor.
Some generics have less active ingredient or binders & fillers that do not metabolize like brand versions or better quality generics.
I STRONGLY SUGGEST YOU FIND YOURSELF A PHARMACY WHO WILL PROCURE TRAZODONE MADE BY APOTEX. THE APOTEX VERSION IS THE CLOSEST THING TO WHAT WATSON MADE.
Bear in mind too that a 'brand' version of Trazodone has not existed since its patent expiration.
Take some time to read about the "Hatch-Waxman Act" in order to get a better idea of why so many generic psychotropic medications are, relatively speaking, "expensive garbage".

If you are in New York City go to Caligore or any of the PRIVATELY OWNED PHARMACIES. PLEASE AVOID THE CHAIN PHARMACIES. The explanation for this is rather lengthy but I can sincerely tell you that I speak from much experience.

Marco, which drug store are you able to find Apotex at? I just had CVS try to special order it twice and fail. I'm not sure if they don't know what they're doing or if it's out of stock. Guess I'll start calling around AGAIN...

Hi Mandy, Pamela, & Deb,

This is Marco writing. Since my last post of Wed., 30 Sept 2015, I do not believe that anything has changed regarding the availability of the Apotex version of Trazadone. It is still available because I continue to purchase it every 90 days. To those individuals in the U.S: If a local pharmacist(s) seems indifferent or is unwilling to help, then I urge you to call every pharmacy within a three-hour driving radius of your home in order to find a pharmacy that will provide a 60 or 90-day supply of Apotex Trazadone. If this is not feasible, please bear in mind that YOUR HEALTH TAKES PRECEDENCE–not what the U.S. Congress stipulates.

I can only speak for myself; however, since Watson discontinued production of Trazadone the only producer which I've found to be a close substitute is Apotex. The chemist who said that there is considerable variability between the producers of generic Trazadone is making an understatement in general–as it pertains to generic psychotropic medications–and in particular as it concerns Trazadone. (If you have any doubt about this then take a few minutes and do a Google search of the "Hatch–Waxman Act" and read what the Act contains. This is the legislation that permitted the creation of the generic drug industry.)

Unfortunately, it seems that whether in the U.S. or Europe doctors are becoming apathetic or outright dismissive–psychiatrists and neurologists are no exception. Too many pharmacists are no less guilty. TOO FEW medical professionals are willing to think "outside of the box". HENCE, THE PATIENT IS LEFT TO HER/HIS OWN RESOURCES IN TERMS OF BEING THEIR OWN ADVOCATE. DON'T EXPECT YOUR PHYSICIAN, 'SHRINK', or PHARMACIST TO "GO OUT ON A LIMB FOR YOU". DON'T SIT AND FRET ABOUT WHETHER OR NOT YOU ARE GOING TO HAVE THE MEDS YOU NEED. INSTEAD, GO ABOUT FINDING THEM.

Mandy, maybe the brand you were taking will not be available but there is more than one manufacturer of Trazodone. Actually I looked on my bottle of Trazodone for the manufacturer and then called them myself. You can do that too.

Hi there, i have been taking 450mg of trazadone at night & 100mg every morning as my depression was very severe & i spent 10 months in a psychiatric unit. I also take amitriptyline 225mg at night plus 400mg of quetiapine & 300mg of pregabalin in the morning & at night. I also take clonazepam 3 times a day. I am very worried about trazadone as my usual chemist have told me there is a manufacturing problem with trazadone. I have enough left for 28 days but if by then no chemists have them can you imagine the withdrawal symptoms i will go through. I have been on this high dose for 3 year's. I don't know a way of talking to the manufactures & despite spending a couple of days on my iPad searching i still can't find out if they are being taken off the market or is a temporary thing. I would appreciate any information as i am sick with worry. Thankyou. My name is Mandy.

Hey Becky, What you describe as your problem with the Pliva brand of Trazodone is very common. Having said that.. I went through the same thing numerous times through the years and was switched back and forth till I would finally get something other than Pliva. I ended up with many many sleepless and anxious nights over it. Finally last May after it happening for the 4th or 5th time I had enough. Pliva is the most popular brand, the one most pharmacies are stocking. Thank Big Pharma for that one. I bit the bullet and stayed on the brand that I could get consistantly. It took about a month of disturbed sleep but now it is working just like I want it to. Sorry you are going through this but they have us over a barrel.

I recently switched from Walgreen's Pharmacy toRiteAid. My first refill of Trazadone didn't seem to help me at all as a sleeping aid. As a matter of fact, when I was able to sleep in short spurts, I had weird dreams. After about 3 nights of this, I figured out it had to be the Trazadone. I read the imprint on the pill, which was Pliva. I researched the manufacturer and discovered others are having the same problem with Pliva. It is my hope that my doctor can prescribe another refill with a different manufacturer. I need sleep!
