Updated

I have been on symbicort for 3 years. I would like to get off it as my asthma is manageable...Are there any physical withdrawals to worry about?

I recently came off it after 8 years and don't feel 100 years old. It's possible, and when I did I discovered that I really didn't need it, as well as that if I do have a brief wheezy day, I can use it that day and then no more. Note that the drug manufacturers themselves actually recommend that you don't use Symbicort in the long-term, due to the risks caused by formoterol, which is linked to increased death rates from asthma. I couldn't find any long-term studies that had looked into the impact of steady use of Symbicort for a duration longer than a year. All that said, it was indeed a great drug when I was using it because it was like I never had to think about my asthma. However, I feel good being off it and usually only need my Ventolin inhaler once ever 2-3 days. I'm no longer using any corticosteroids for my asthma.

I was prescribed Symbicort for wheezing which was mild. I was subsequently diagonesd with infection in lung which got cured by taking antibiotic for 5 days. I am per tkt alright now with no wheezing. The doctor insists on gradual giving up of Symbicort by reducing the dose. I want to stop taking Symbicort immediately as I don't feel comfortable. I never had any history in the past. I have used Sumbicort only 2 weeks. Please advise if I can stop using Symbicort.

I am 70 and have been on symbacort and flonase for several years. The fibromyalgia and fatigue has made life extremely difficult. I was always very active before but ow don't have the energy or interest to do anything. I'm TOO young mentally to retire and give up. I just want my life back. I did not know about the connection between an iodine allergy and symbacort. Can anyone please help with this.

I had shortness of breath and opacity which showed up on a lung scan. Pulmonary dr. started me on Symbicort a month ago. PCP said it was viral pneumonia and would take 8 weeks to recover. She told me to continue Symbicort. Saw pulmonary dr. and he said to stop Symbicort if it didn't make any difference in the shortness of breath. And it really had not. Within 24 hours of discontinuing, I felt like I had the flu..headache, fever, joint pain. Is this a reaction to stopping it suddenly?

I've been on Symbicort for three years and have also used Dulera, Advair and Breo all of which have major side effects including muscle pain and muscle loss, vertigo flu like symptoms. Symbicort was the most effective but I had to taper off because of extreme fibromyalgia. It's only been a month both pain is subsiding and I'm sleeping better. He can try calling Astra Zeneca to see if they can help continuing with his medication
I found out personally that you have to use the minimal amount that you can function with. I'm 70 and had asthma for 69 years. Still work and try to enjoy life, just with less energy

WOW, My voice has been terrible for a long time and you're the first person who gave me a clue as to the reason why. Thanks for that. I'm coming off this s*** as my asthma is manageable without it.

I agree with you that it is best we moderate the dosage. Using symbicort for the last 6 yrs, MD's suggested dosage was 2 puffs twice a day. From the beginning, I have lived and breathed well with only 1 puff per day. Prior to Symbicort I was given Advair inhaler. Used Advair for abt 7 years with no side effect With Symbicort I gained over 30 lbs in the first 6 months using the inhaler.
Prior to Advair, I used Serevent inhale and Accolate (pill form). Serevent had reported deaths. But they emphasized the dangers of using it as rescue remedy during an asthma attack... it may have been the case in the unfortunate deaths.

I am hoping to stop taking Symbicort hoping to shed the unnecessary extra 30 pounds. I am now, 5 feet tall and weigh 160 lbs, while 130 was full enough for me.

OVERMEDICATION by the medical profession remains a serious abuse. We are all ultimately responsible for our bodies, we know how it feels every moment. And, as the person inside, we should feel FREE to adjust RX (medications) judicicously and responsibly. Everyone should be able to consult these changes with his/her medic without entering into pharmaceutical guidelines fanaticism. The pharmaco is all about big $$$ and hooking overmedicated people. BEWARE folks!

I was on symbicort for 10 years then read this was the cause of a members voice deterioration and immediately came of it 2 months ago. Nothing whatsoever has happened to me except getting my natural voice back and was a blessing in disguise. I must admit for the last month I've done a lot more walking and this has helped my breathing pattern to enormously.

Good luck and hope you have the same success as me

I have taken myself off this medication 2 times now as I don't like the side effects. I cut down very, very slowly on the dosage - like 3 puffs a day for 3 or 4 days and then 2 puffs a day for 4 days and so on. I get a bit of head pain but it is not too bad.
