Antibiotic For Tooth Infection (Top voted first)
UpdatedHad tooth pulled yesterday. Tooth had root canal, crown 20 yrs ago. Tooth got infected, had to be taken out. The doctor didn't say I needed an antibiotic to kill the infection. Would Amoxocillin do anything? It is very sore and throbbing. I don't want to take pain medication. I would think the infection is still in the gum.

Hello, Susan! How are you? Sorry about the tooth problem.
However, an antibiotic is not always necessary. In most cases of dental infection, the bacteria becomes trapped in the tooth, or under the tooth, so once it's extracted it will drain and usually clear up on its own.
Thus, you shouldn't take an antibiotic, unless your doctor or dentist has specifically said you need to take one. Taking one when it isn't needed creates the risk of developing antibiotic resistant bacteria.
The soreness and throbbing are normal after a dental extraction and may continue for a couple of days.
If you feel there may be something wrong, then contact your dentist to have them check it out.
Is there anything else I can help with?
My feelings about antibiotic resistant bacteria is due to the antibiotics used to give to cattle. I found that 70% of antibiotics used in this country are used in this way.
I would like to see the Government ban this practice.
thanks! I went back to him the other day and doing better.
