The best way to think of the expiration date would be to actually consider it a guaranteed full potency date. That is the maximum time that the manufacturer can guarantee that the drug will have its full beneficial effect under the most commonly used storage conditions. Past that date, the efficacy level starts to drop.

Now, antibiotics can be more problematic than many other medications, because once they start to lose effectiveness, they may not properly eradicate infectious bacteria, which may result in antibiotic resistance, making things even worse.

Additionally, if your doctor prescribed it to treat an infection and you didn't finish it all, as you are supposed to, then you are also running that same risk, so you shouldn't have any leftover to expire!

If you think you have an infection that requires an antibiotic, then you need to see your doctor to have it confirmed and get a new prescription.
